| Mia Lor Houlberg Medium mixed media DETRITIVORES When working with mold I introduce a variety of fungal species into a small enclosed space. These spaces include substances which fungi feed upon, as well as materials they can not break down. These small living installations contain a combination of decomposition, new life and stasis, During the duration of an investigation, what species will prevail or how extensive the growth will be is an unknown. Through this process of experimenting with mold and cultivating fungal colonies, I am able to reclaim science not only as a personal discourse but from a feminist perspective. Mold, though hardy is also fragile and perishes in confinement after a few weeks. Therefore all that remains from this process of working is the photographic documentation. These photographs record the moment where what is seen as beautiful and what is seen as repulsive overlap. This body of work seeks to encourage the process of decay into the aesthetic of perception.
